Picture: PAUL CARRACHERDISTRICT 17 Country Fire Authorityoperations manager Dale Russell has encouraged people to get involved in the annual Natimuk and District Field and Game Club shoot.

The clay target shooting day is at the Natimuk and District Field and Game shooting ground on Sunday, August 7.

“It’s not just for CFA volunteers, it’s for the community to come along as well. That’s what we’d like to see,” Russell said.

The shoot started in 2001, with 98 shooters and grew to 147 by2015.

Russell said the authority expectedsimilar numbers at this year’s shoot.

“We startedthe shoot as an experiment andwe’ve been running it ever since, so it’s been very successful,” he said.

Green Taylor Partners is back as a major sponsor for another year and goods have been donated towards a major raffle, with all proceeds to go to the Alfred Hospital burns unit.

“The burns unit is internationally recognised for the care they give, so we are happy to support that,” Russell said.

“Unfortunately over the years we’ve had some of our own members in there for various reasons and members of the public.

“We’re trying to support them upgrading their equipment and enhance the treatment capabilities of the unit.”

The shoot has raised $12,000 for the burns unit in the past 15 years.

Russell said the event was working to promote shooting as a safe, family-friendly sport.

“We are promoting shooting. It’s safe, children, ladies and some disabled people come along from time to time. It’s for all people,” he said.

“It’s an Olympic sport. It’s very popular.

“You don’t need a shooting licence. It’s a bit like driving, you can shoot under instruction.

“We can match people up with somebody who can helpthem through what to do and where to go.”

Russell stressed that the authoritywelcomedspectators and members of the public, not just volunteers.

“Come along and give it a try. It’s a fun event for people to come together in a friendly environment.

“All the CFA volunteers come together when there’s a fire –when there’s a problem.

“This is a chance for them to come together for a social event and raise money for a good cause.”

The shooting starts at 10.30am with more than $1000 worth of prizes to be won.The simulated field features 52 targets.

Adult tickets are $20 and childrenare $10.

Children must be over 12 years old to participate.
