Having come out of retirement to win last year’s event, Pora thoroughly prepared for his title defence and said he was confident in the lead up.
“When I won it last year it came as a shock, they asked me tocome out of retirement because there was no other Australian shearercompeting,” Mike Pora said.
“I prepared a bit better this time.”
The competition’s format requires contestants to shear four sheep through threerounds, and in the fourth andfinal round shear six.
Pora progressed tothe semi finals as the top qualifier where he met 23-year-old Michigan (US) shearer Timothy Wright, who he defeated again in the final.
“The top scorers in the semi finals made it to the final. The guy who finishedfourth I versed again in the final,” Pora explained.
“I’d been shearing well, I competed at the Eastern Canadian Championships and finished third behind the Canadian and American champions. I’d got right where I wanted to be.”
Pora, who also finished second in the International Team’s Championships paired with a New Zealand shearer, says he’s planning onreturning to Calgarynext year to defend his title for a second time.
“It was the 20thanniversary of the Championships this year. They tell me no one’s won it three times so that’s the motivation,” he said.
Pora is alsoorganisingnext month’s highly anticipated Canowindra Wool Expo from August 25 to28.
“It’s a world first, all the major manufacturers will display gear at the one timeinthe one place. To host it in Canowindra is a huge achievement,” Pora said.
“People from around Australia are talking about coming to Canowindra for a couple of days. Representatives, manufacturers, importers can all come together for the first time and talk about products.”
