TWO teams from Lower Eyre Peninsula competed in the SAPSASA Soccer Championships at Barrett Reserve, West Beach, including a girls’ team.
The girls played in division threewith a pool of nineteams.Lane Pennington was the coach of the girls.
The girls team was made up of LEP players and two “gun” recruits from Whyalla. The girls played Murraylands, winning 2-1.They also playedNorth Eastern, winning 6-2.There was some excellent play by Abbey in goals.Maya scored fivegoals and Airlie scored two. Whilestill learning how soccer is played, Joni, Kelli, Asha, Nellie, Maddie and Taylor all showed improvement.Nellie and Airlie also had a shot as goalkeeper which is a task that many players did not want to do.
With many of the girls’ team never having played soccer before it was a very positive and surprising end to the day with twowins.
The girls played Barker losing5-1.Barker wasa very polished and skilfulsoccer team. Our girls were on the back foot from the beginning. But to their credit, they never gave up and continued to provide plenty of pressure and body work against the Barker team. The second game against Southern Valley was a loss ofloss 3-2.It was another great game of soccer. This game could have gone either way.
On Wednesday the girls only hadone game andplayed Northern Yorke Peninsula, going down 1-0.Georgia, Taylor, Asha and Tahlia all did their best to stop the scoring of NYP with some great defensive work.Airlie, Maya and Kelli continued to apply attacking pressure.
The girls hadtwoscheduled games for the day.But due to weather all afternoon games were cancelled. In the morning, the girls played Barossa, Light and Gawler, drawing1-1.
On the final day of the competition, the girls played Mid North and finished with a great win 7-3. Airlie kicked four goals.Maya kicked three.Asha had another great game in goalkeeper. Maddie, Ella, Joni, Chelsea, Tahlia and Taylor all played their part in this wonderful end to their week.A huge thank you to the parents for their support of their kids. Also, a big ‘thank youto Lane Pennington who coached the team.
